Shared AI context AI memory across tools

Why AI memory does not travel between tools

ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can each remember things about you. None of them shares that memory with the others. This page explains why, what memory is good for, and what to keep somewhere every tool can read.

In short

  1. Each assistant keeps its own memory inside its own product.
  2. Memory records what you said. It does not record what you decided.
  3. Keep decisions in a source you control and let every tool read it.

The basics

What AI memory is

AI memory is a feature that lets an assistant carry details from earlier conversations into later ones: your name, your preferences, the project you mentioned.

It is convenient. It is also built from what you happened to say in that product, so it is as complete as your chats were.

The limit

Why it stays inside one tool

  • Separate products

Each assistant stores its own memory for its own service. There is no common place to read from.

  • Built from conversation

What is remembered depends on what came up, not on what matters most.

  • Not an approved record

Memory is built automatically, so it can still hold a decision you later reversed.

The difference

Memory and a shared source do different jobs

Memory inside each tool

  • Built from what you said in that product
  • Stays inside that product
  • Records what was said, not what was decided
  • Each tool keeps its own copy

One approved Direction

  • Written and approved by you
  • Read by every connected tool
  • Versioned, so each result cites what it used
  • Drafts and private notes stay out of reach

What to do

What to do about it

  1. Use memory for convenience

Let each tool remember small preferences. That is what it is for.

  2. Keep decisions elsewhere

Write goals, voice, product facts and decisions in one place you control and approve.

  3. Connect, do not paste

Where a tool can connect to that place, connect it. Everywhere else, paste the same current version.

Useful questions.

Can I move my ChatGPT memory into Claude?

Memory is kept per product, so it does not follow you from one tool to another by itself. Copy the facts that matter into a source you control, and give every tool access to it.

Should I turn memory off?

That is your choice. Memory is useful for small preferences. For decisions that others rely on, use a source you can read, correct and approve.

Does VisionBoard replace memory?

No. It sits next to it. Memory keeps small preferences inside each tool; your approved Direction gives every connected tool the same facts and decisions.
