A vision board for your team or company
A shared board can show a team where it is heading in a way a document cannot. It can also stop short of what a team needs, which is knowing what is decided. Here is how to make one together, and where it ends.
In short
- A board makes the picture visible, so people stop imagining different things.
- A team can make a first one in a single working session.
- A board does not say what is decided. A Vision with goals and approvals adds that.
The reason
Why a team makes a vision board
People can agree with a sentence and still picture different things. A board makes the picture visible: the product, the customer, the place the work is done, the way it should feel.
It is also quick. A team can make a first board in a single working session, which is easier than agreeing a long document.
The session
Make one together in five steps
Agree the question
Where do we want to be in a year? A narrow question gives a clearer board.
Everyone brings two or three pictures
Each with one sentence on why. This surfaces differences early.
Choose together what stays
Keep what several people picked. Talk about the rest, and drop what the team cannot stand behind.
Write the sentence that goes with it
One short line the whole team would repeat.
Put it where the work happens
Next to the roadmap or at the top of the planning page, and look at it at the start of each quarter.
The limit
Where a board ends
A board shows a direction and a feeling. It does not say what is decided, who agreed to it, or whether it is still current. When a team starts asking those questions, a board needs something behind it.
In VisionBoard, a board lives inside a Vision, next to the goals, decisions, and brand and product truth behind it. People review and approve what becomes the current direction, so the team works from one answer. How that works for companies is shown in the company vision use case.
The habit
Keep it current
Set a review each quarter. Replace the pictures that are no longer true and update the sentence. A board a team can trust is one that changes when the direction does.
Useful questions.
Is a vision board enough for a company vision?
It is a good start for a shared picture. For goals, decisions, and approvals that people can rely on, a company Vision adds them next to the board.
How long does it take a team to make one?
A first board fits in one working session. Plan a short review each quarter.
Who should be in the room?
The people who will act on it: product, design, and the leaders who set priorities. A board made by only one person is a picture of that person.
