Vision board ideas for every area of life
If a blank board feels hard, start from the area of life you want to move forward, not from the pictures. Here are eight areas, with what to picture in each and a sentence to start from.
In short
- Start from one or two areas that matter now, not from the pictures.
- Picture the moment you would recognise, not the number you want to reach.
- Use short sentences in the present tense, in your own voice.
Where to begin
Start from the area, not the picture
Pick one or two areas that matter most right now. A board for everything is hard to read, and a board for one or two things is easy to act on.
For each area, ask what you would like to be true in a year, then choose a picture of the moment you would recognise it.
Eight areas
What to put in each area
Career and work
The kind of work you want to do, the place you do it, and the people you do it with.
Try: “I am building work I am proud of.”
Money and security
A picture of what steadiness gives you: a calm desk, a home, a trip you can afford.
Try: “I have room to say yes to what matters.”
Health and energy
The activity you want to do, not the number you want to reach.
Try: “I move every day and sleep well.”
Home and surroundings
A room, a light, a corner of your own.
Try: “My home is calm and ready for guests.”
Relationships and family
Moments with the people you want to spend more time with.
Try: “I make time for the people I love.”
Travel and experiences
A place you want to see, or a kind of day you want to have more of.
Try: “One trip a year that is only for me.”
Learning and growth
The skill or subject you want to get better at, with a picture of practising it.
Try: “I learn something new every month.”
Creativity and play
Tools, spaces, and small moments of making.
Try: “I make something every week, before anything new.”
The words
Words that help a board work
Use short sentences in the present tense, in your own voice. Start from what you do, not from what you hope: “This season I make room for…”, “I am building…”, “Every week I…”.
If a sentence does not sound like you when you read it aloud, change it until it does.
The layout
Pick a layout that fits the areas
For six areas side by side, the Life Chapters template gives each area its own picture and caption. For one area that matters most, Hero Focus puts one picture in front. For just a few priorities, Minimal Focus keeps the board calm.
Useful questions.
What should I put on a vision board?
Pictures of what you want to do, feel, or have more of, in the areas that matter most this season, plus a short title and a sentence or two in your own words.
Can a vision board cover more than one area?
Yes. A board with a few areas is easy to read. If you want many areas, give each a picture and a short caption, as the Life Chapters template does.
How do I choose between ideas?
Keep the ones you would be glad to see on an ordinary Tuesday. If an idea does not move you, leave it off.
